My dad was the one who made the Xmas season awesome for me. From the day after Thanksgiving to the day we finally took down the tree in January, he made everything feel special. He’s the one who made the turkey soup, he’s the one who always made sure I got the bigger piece of the wishbone, he made sure we kept the tradition of going up to the Santa Cruz Mountains to cut down a fresh Xmas tree every year. He put the lights on the tree, he built the fire every evening, he was the one to make sure that carols were playing on the record player every evening. So as an adult, I don’t have any hard feelings for his decision to tell me about Santa. My daddy had a jolly belly, his cheeks got rosy when he’d had a few drinks, and though he didn’t “Ho Ho Ho” necessarily, he did have a great chuckle. I think in my young mind, I just dropped the beard and red suit and transformed the image into my dad. The reason why he told me Santa wasn’t “real” is the best part of the story. You see, I found a magazine one day with a picture of a lady in a red velvet coat with white furry trim, a Santa hat, a black leather belt and thigh high stiletto boots. But you could see her…umm…you know…her (shh…boobies). I looked inside at the pull out photo and you could see a lot more than just that! I thought it was funny that she liked kittens but that she was called a “bunny” for some reason. There were some funny cartoons and lots of articles in the Broadside You Still Call Us Pop Punk But I Think I Would Call Us Alternative Pop Rock Now Shirt. I just didn’t understand why all the women were, you know.

The ensuing exchange of Hi’s and why’s; where’s and what’s and what’s your name. She was on her way back – while I was going in, but I still was able to help her. She was wondering about how far the parking lot was and how she would get there. We were already off the trail, so I pointed out the rock formation with the petroglyphs where the hiking path ended. From up there she would be able to spot my rather tall camper, I knew for sure because I had seen it. The purpose of my ascend onto the formation was specifically that. I would be able to spot “The Chimneys” from afar when coming back – and from there I would see the camper. Basic desert navigation procedure. You walk by landmarks, not by compass and maps. Later on that day I would find out, that Santa Elena Canyon was not reachable on time to be able to walk back. Too many “arroyos” – and they became steeper and deeper and harder to cross the closer I came to the river. Too much time spent looking for cacti as well. So the smart thing to do is to abort the mission and drive to the canyon next day. I barely made it back to the truck with the last good daylight – done and out! Next day, after breakfast, I climbed into the Broadside You Still Call Us Pop Punk But I Think I Would Call Us Alternative Pop Rock Now Shirt and noticed a note under the wiper. A Thank you note! Quite personal. She had found her way out without a problem. Good! She left her name and address, too. Somewhere in Texas, with an invitation to write her. This left me puzzled for a while. Now – THAT was weird! I was focused on my epic trip through the North American Desert. In May, I had already been all the way down to the tip of Baja and back, then Southern Arizona. I had started to nurse this idea of living in America, one of the reasons being the fact that I could actually interact easily with people here. I was 25 back in 1987, never dated, and still unkissed. I never thought about that anymore – and how easy it were to live in the U.S. with an American girlfriend. I mean, I could have tried! But I didn’t. It didn’t come to my mind.

‘Believe me, because I tell you the truth, that the world will greatly fear you if ye shall observe my words. For if it feared not to have its wickedness revealed it would not hate you, but it feareth to be revealed, therefore it will hate you and persecute you. If ye shall see your words scorned by the world lay it not to heart, but consider how that God is greater than you; who is in such wise scorned by the world that his wisdom is counted madness If God endureth the world with patience, wherefore will ye lay it to heart, O dust and clay of the earth? In your patience ye shall possess your soul. Therefore if one shall give you a blow on one side of the face, offer him the other that he may smite it. Render not evil for evil, for so do all the worst animals; but render good for evil, and pray God for them that hate you. Fire is not extinguished with fire, but rather with water; even so I say unto you that ye shall not overcome evil with evil, but rather with good. Behold God, who causeth the sun to come upon the good and evil, and likewise the Broadside You Still Call Us Pop Punk But I Think I Would Call Us Alternative Pop Rock Now Shirt. Soought ye to do good to all; for it is written in the law: “Be ye holy, for I your God am holy; be ye pure, for I am pure; and be ye perfect, for I am perfect.” Verily I say unto you that the servant studieth to please his master, and so he putteth not on any garment that is displeasing to his master. Your garments are your will and your love. Beware, then, not to will or to love a thing that is displeasing to God, our Lord. Be ye sure that God hateth the pomps and lusts of the world, and therefore hate ye the world.

My sister and I tried our best to help, but we couldn’t shovel that deep of a Broadside You Still Call Us Pop Punk But I Think I Would Call Us Alternative Pop Rock Now Shirt! However we helped by making sandwiches and juice or water for lunches. I know, those weren’t warm meals, but this was before microwaves were cheap enough for us to have one, and we were too young to be trusted at a hot stove without supervision, so sandwiches and water it was! They never once complained. It was 3 days til Christmas when Mom sat my sister and I on the couch with a very important message. “I just got a call from Mrs. Claus and she said Christmas might be a few days late because Santa has a bad cold. He sends his apologies, but he doesn’t feel very good right now.” My sister (having the kind of belief in Santa Claus and innocence that only a 4 year old can possess) said”Well…Mom? Just call Mrs. Claus back. Tell her to give Santa a couple aspirin and he will be just fine by morning. OK?” Mom promised to do just that. Christmas morning dawn saw a beautiful decorated and lit tree, with a few gifts (including a small child’s kitchen for the both of us) under it! Several decades later I found out our neighbors heard what Mom and my sister talked about and they all couldn’t let us down! They spent all Christmas Eve night setting EVERYTHING up for us! That night, we all made the rounds to everyone’s houses, and all those Christmas “conspirators” pretended to be “surprised” as my sister and I told them what Santa brought to our home “He even brought us a pretty tree with decorations and lights!” Sometimes, when your Christmas seems so down, if you listen close enough, you can just about hear a little 4 year old girl tell her mom “ Don’t worry. Everything will be OK!

Anyway, so now when my kids came along. We would put the tree up and decorate it on December 10th whatever day that fell on. I’d make hot chocolate and we’d turn the lights off so the only light came from the tree. Then we’d watch Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, the little drummer boy, Frosty the snowman, How the grinch stole Christmas and a Charlie Brown Christmas. On Christmas Eve we would party. I would cook and my sister would stop at the dollar store get cheap gag gifts, my cousins would come over and we would play games until midnight or 1am however long we could wait. Never later than 2. Then we’d call the kids in and Broadside You Still Call Us Pop Punk But I Think I Would Call Us Alternative Pop Rock Now Shirt watch them play with their toys until they keeled over. In the meantime I’d start Christmas dinner my cousins would play a few more games before they left. Christmas Day about noon dinner was ready and I’d keel over lol. I was the first one to have kids, now everyone does but we all live far apart so we just get together on Christmas Day for dinner. We still play games after we eat though.
