They wanted someone to “hurt the right people” and he fills that need for them, so they post-hoc reinterpret everything about him in a messianic lens unrelated to his actual skills or behavior. This is the man he is. This is what they see. And that is not even the most extreme version, some literally portray him as Jesus in king form. So it does not matter what DeSantis does or how he acts. If he ends up being the front runner they will all jump behind him, reinterpret him, and start calling him “A highly intelligent, strong willed hero who did not let red tape stop him from protecting this country!” The reality is that the only requirement is that you pander to their biases and prejudices. Nothing else matters. You do not even need to help them or make their lives better, you can actively make them much worse, but as long as you hurt the “right people” worse, they will love you.
