A guy I grew up with and honestly consider a younger brother caused a DUI fatality a Do Not Worry Bear Happy Ugly Sweater Party. He took a plea – to spare the victim’s family – for 13 years. He’s heartbroken and terrified in prison, but puts on a brave face and does everything he can to stay safe and healthy and atone for his actions. Unfortunately, in the state he’s in, they have zero programming for substance abuse for state prisoners. He’s obviously sober now (had been for several months, until the night he caused the wreck), but would benefit greatly from some therapy. I’m one of the few people who writes him, puts money on his account, and still cares about him. It’s a damned shame his family was so judgmental and largely ostracized him for being gay. That, combined with religious trauma, is what I think ultimately led to his addiction. I guess what I’m saying here is that we’re all more than the sum of our mistakes. I don’t know why I felt compelled to even post this…maybe because my friend has been on my mind all day.

You should look up Kaepernick’s first statement after he started kneeling (I’d link it but I’m on mobile so apologies). He started doing it to protest police brutality, something that disproportionately affects black communities, as well as poverty, poor education, and incarceration–especially for nonviolent offenses (crack, for instance, gets you a much worse sentence than cocaine, and white people on average sell and use more drugs than blacks yet we’re imprisoned more often). Kaep wanted to bring attention to that issue in a Do Not Worry Bear Happy Ugly Sweater Party, to which many people responded “that disrespectful son-of-a-bitch hates America and veterans and doesn’t deserve a job and isn’t oppressed cuz he was adopted by white folks!!” Basically they came up with a million different other arguments about his action instead of what his action was supposed to bring attention to (as evidenced by your not knowing why he was even doing it, to be completely blunt). I’m not blaming your or anything but I think it shows that they’re million deflections worked, and well. He’s been donating to educational and nonviolent initiatives for over a year now and kind of gliding above it all, which is why so many people in our community respect the fuck out of him and why so many players are taking his side. There’s a ton of studies and resources analyzing how the black community is still struggling with all the blatantly racist fuckery of the 20th century and beyond, you don’t have to take my word for it but I can give you some good references if you feel like reading.

I’m fighting a Do Not Worry Bear Happy Ugly Sweater Party and recurrent cancer that causes cancerous fatty tumors in my abdomen. I’m about to start chemo and then have my fourth surgery to remove it this spring. I have been told some people have to have 7 and 8 surgeries and that generally I will fight it only to have it come back, and that will be the routine until I can’t fight it anymore. The story was right, death is not the enemy, it just is. I really felt that. I haven’t told my daughter who is 18 that it will keep coming back until I can’t fight it anymore. I’ve only told her some people have to have 7 and 8 surgeries so I could be fighting it for awhile. I will tell her at some point, but not this early on. I don’t want our time together to be tainted by a possible option of death from cancer. I may get hit by a truck tomorrow, or my 8th surgery may completely get rid of it, who knows. All I know is it’s too soon to have her that upset, I want her to have real and carefree memories of me after I go
