I am a stay at home mom because day care is expensive and double the daycare is, well…twice as expensive. This coming school year, my kids will be four, old enough for pre-k. I’ve been looking for a part time preschool so that they can learn to be in a classroom setting, taking directions, following someone else’s rules other than my own, interacting with other kids, and let’s face it—I’m not a teacher and don’t have the knowledge or patience to be teaching them everything they should know on day one of kindergarten. Don’t get me wrong, I do my absolute best, but I’m no substitute for a degreed teacher. You know what pre-k costs around here, even for part time? $200 a WEEK, per KID. $400 a week for me, $1600 a month. That’s my mortgage. Others were more expensive, one was $1250 per kid per month, or $2500 a month for two kids.Luckily, we found a church (I am agnostic) offering a two day program for $375/kid/month after we qualified for a scholarship for kids of disabled veterans. It shouldn’t be this expensive to give your kids the best start in life and treating mothers (who, realistically, got pregnant and gave birth, it’s not exactly rocket science and in no way qualifies them to be a whole early education teacher) like they should have all the resources and knowledge of professionals is asinine. Pre-k is known to improve educational and developmental outcomes. Fund it, already!
