Unrelated, but Spinel owes Umberlee a Hercules Hades Immortally Mad Characters shirt now for assisting in a trial. Apparently Umberlee is going to send one of her real priests onto Spinel’s ship, when Spinel graduates and assembles her own crew. I got to make said priest—he’s a proper Yandere. Spinel has no idea what she just signed up for. Immediately volunteered to participate in the Blood War when she learned Errakyon would have to serve in order to pay for some mass resurrections. (Long story that marks the start of Erra’s redemption. It’s awesome!) Instead of him going to Avernus for one day a week for ten years, now both of them go to Avernus for one day a week for five years.

It’s hard to make any “real” conclusions since the version I’m going off of is the 2018 playtest and not the Hercules Hades Immortally Mad Characters shirt , which is yet to come out. Right now it’s definitely looking a bit rough, such that I hard-switched back to 5th edition when I realized it wasn’t going to work past a certain point. Some things about Pathfinder 2nd are great — the tactics and dynamics of physical combat have never felt better in any version of this that I’ve ever played. Some things are… less great. I don’t think they quite nailed a consistently rewarding level progression, I think the level scaling hampers and stifles the game a lot more than it helps, and spellcasters are just awful in the rules as written so far. Overall, though, the direction that Pathfinder 2 is going in captures the same kind of tactical depth that the original game was known for, but with a much cleaner presentation and much more potential fun during actual play, as opposed to the false depth that the original tended to emphasize during character sheet management. If the final release cleans up the rough edges nicely, it could become my game of preference.

Raise the stakes for the encounter too. Maybe the Mind Flayers have a powerful spelljammer than’s literally a Hercules Hades Immortally Mad Characters shirt  with laser cannons and such. Maybe a single one of them can dismissively defeat the entire party, or even a military force. Maybe they have hostages who must not be harmed. One thing’s for certain: all who know them should be terrified. I’m actually not a fan of mind flayers who use their mental powers to sense everything that the PCs are doing. Again, truly alien Mind Flayers probably have as much trouble analyzing the thoughts of a human as a human would their thoughts. So don’t play the “the Mind Flayer read your mind and knows what you are doing” card too much. This doesn’t mean the Mind Flayers have to be stupid, but making them all-knowing is problematic because that leaves the PCs with only one option: beating them by dint of arms. That’s fine to happen at some point, but it shouldn’t be the main thrust of the plot.

I think they need to look at their appeal outside the US in order to benefit from the Hercules Hades Immortally Mad Characters shirt dollar in export markets where they aren’t beaten down by Trump tarrifs, and rebase their assembly where they are. They won’t turn it around immediately, but I believe they need to gradually reverse the poor decisions of recent years in their model line-up, and reconsider their attitude to performance. HD are launching an electric bike too — important future proofing, but only likely to appeal to politically correct Californian millionaires in the short term.
