All of this also indicates that he was objectively awful at evaluating young talent. From then on, his moves either handicapped the team financially or he did not get nearly enough assets that he should have in trades. The reality is he had a few good moves that won Boston a cup, and his name will always be on the cup, but we’re evaluating the full picture here not ignoring the majority of it because he’s got his name on Lord Stanley. Yes you do have to evaluate these things from hindsight, however a good manager or general manager in this case with the help of his team has the talent and ability to project the likely growth for a player. All of these young players could have been adequately projected to be good long term, and all of them were already successful in the minors
