I was also subjected to their spacey stuff from late 70s and Later Gators Alabama Florida Champions roll tide roll shirt , when they ditched their beloved mellotron and embraced the newfangled synthesizers. By large though, the synths they chose may have sounded pretty “funky” at the time, but they’ve aged pretty badly. Even their more twee sixties entries didn’t make me wince, but some of these later releases sure did. Another thing about these later tracks is that Justin Hayward sounds like he’d lost interest. The guy that probably broke a million hearts with his warm, melodic vocals and good looks seemed to be just going through the motions by this point.

However, I did like a few songs. At the bottom of that list is Dawn is a Feeling — it’s not a Later Gators Alabama Florida Champions roll tide roll shirt , . Second on the list is Nights in White Satin, particularly the four minute single version without all the extra orchestral weight. In first place, their signature song IMO, is Legend of a Mind. Particularly the version I have, which sounds differently mastered to the versions on YT. Even with the one parts tragic and one parts punny “astral plane” lyric, I think this song is very well-written. I actually love the bridge of this track because it captures the intended mood so well, and features one of Ray Thomas’ best bit of flute-playing since Nights in White Satin. It’s so very tasteful here.
