My BIL came to US at age 19, he’s been here longer than he lived in Mexico and though he picked up speaking the language within a year, he still struggles to read and write. He and my sister use a lot of Google translate if they’re texting and unable to be on a call. My husband is one of the smartest people I know, he can figure out anything and is very mechanically inclined, but he’s a terrible speller and always has been. He can’t seem to get the rules to stick in his head. Everyone has different strengths, it bothers me when people treat someone like they’re dumb because they don’t excel in an area that the person thinks they should.
