So I did what any sane person would do, just parked myself there and sipped my mimosa watching her lose her shit and occasionally look up at me and shake her fist. Friend came back with husband and he peeked over to see her pacing like a damn hyena in front of the Mario Kart Ugly Christmas Sweater. Since people would be arriving soon they worried she would force her way in with others. I posted on the Facebook group a quick rundown on what was happening, so people knew what they were possibly walking into. MIL then had a brilliant idea. She buzzed ALL of the other apartments, hoping someone might let her in, while she continued to call out for her son who at this point was hiding on the roof drinking straight out of the bottle of champagne. Someone let the bitch in. She charged into the building and at this point friend’s husband whipped out his phone and dialed 911. He said and I quote “My unstable mother I haven’t spoken to in 2 years traveled across the country and showed up at my apartment screaming. She just broke in to the building and we are scared she is a danger to us and herself. We live XXX.” I’m pretty sure by the time this “I have bad knees and a thyroid problem” lady made it up the stairs to the 4th floor the cops were rolling up.

He winced as I spoke, so subtly I almost missed it. I could see the Mario Kart Ugly Christmas Sweater his mouth tighten. Had I just… annoyed him? “What’s so special up there in them rocks and trees?” He clenched his hands into fists. He was acting like I was sitting behind him in class, asking him for the answers to a test. What was he getting told by the spirit? I leaned in to his ear, “the mountains to the east huh? Whence the drumming and wrath of the fucking spirit cometh – what honey doth thou master pour in thine ear, dickhead?” He whipped his whole body around to face me, glaring at me with a visceral hatred. He had tears in his eyes… this ghost was about to fuckin cry. I was floored. He came at me then, with deliberate movement, a booze-fueled young man’s stride you see in the parking lot of a bar, the kind that brings fists with it. My heart started pounding immediately. I took a step back as though to brace for him. He can’t touch you, dumbass. I forced myself to hold my ground. Right before it happened, I think I said outloud “oh what’re you gonna d-“ Then he screamed in my face. It wasn’t a scream though, it was a fog horn, a dying pig, a sheet of aluminum in a tornado, a terrified kid bleeding to death in a truck on the battlefield. It made my organs shake, I went blind, couldn’t tell up from down. I could smell the noise of his scream, taste it. It felt like all my teeth were splintering in my gums. When he stopped, I realized I was lying in the snow, staring up at Creeps, his body shaking. He turned and stalked away before I’d even realized what happened.

Such a good guide on how to update the look without having to completely give up skinnies. I do think the Mario Kart Ugly Christmas Sweater looks nice and paired with a more modern top and boots like you’ve suggested is a good compromise. Having said that, once I started wearing looser fits I never looked back. It’s SO much more comfortable. Bonus is feeling more like I’m dressing for myself than the male gaze. I’m not buying any wide leg jeans (I think that silhouette for trousers will probably have more longevity) but I love straight leg and generally baggy fit jeans. They’re not particularly in trend but not outdated like a skinny which is also a good compromise for folks who aren’t used to the idea of wide leg jeans.
