This was the Santa Claus character that gained popularity the world over. So, what once started as a real-life Catholic Bishop Nicholas from Turkey, turned into a legendary Christmas character, Santa Claus, popularized and established by society and the mass media.

Mechanical advantage: Spellcaster simplicity. A warlock is a spellcaster but they are also in play the Miku and winnie shirt spellcaster in the game. Tracking spell slots? What’s that. You get two that refresh at every short rest. Spell levels? What are they? Your spells level up when you level up. Sure this might take a few minutes every few sessions – but it’s nowhere near as obnoxious as spending time in play while other people are waiting for you. Overlong spell lists to faff with? 1+level isn’t that long. Spell preparation? Nope. None of that round here either. You get almost all the fun part of spellcasting (the ability to cast spells) with very little of the faff that goes with it and all in a package that’s pretty newbie friendly.

You can give any character of any class a distinctive personality, strong motivations, and interesting connections to the Miku and winnie shirt around her. And so, the Elf game was begun. The rules in this household (as understood by the mom) were basically that the Elf would arrive on December 1. He’d hide somewhere in the house, watch the children all day, and report back to Santa each night, arriving again before the children awoke, hiding in a new spot, and waiting another day. On December 24, the elf would go home with Santa in his sleigh, his duty done til next year. The Elf wouldn’t be touched, or he’d turn into a doll again and no “extra special Elf gift” would be waiting with Santa’s gift that year. The children (the three year old) named their elf “Holly Jolly.” The game began and was easy, as the family lived with Grandma and Grandpa, who had a very large, very nice house with *very* high ceilings (and therefore lots of high hiding places for the elf, far from reach).
