Maybe saying this scene “broke” me is a bit of a New York Actual Size Tee retch, but it always struck me as so unfair. Through flashbacks, CoS tells of Hagrid’s story. Poor young 14 year old Hagrid was already an orphan with nowhere to really go other than Hogwarts. And Riddle accuses him of killing a girl! I don’t hear many people discussing that fact. More emphasis is always put on how his wand was snapped in half and he was expelled (two other great tragedies of the situation, true). But that’s not the saddest part really. He had to deal with the weight of having the whole wizarding world thinking he could have been responsible for someone’s death! Now, he knew he never let Aragog out of his box, and that Aragog didn’t open any stupid secret chamber. But, I’m sure you can imagine that being accused of murder at 14 years old, whether you knew you did it or not, is life altering! And then, like I said, his wand was snapped and he was expelled from the one place he had to call home. So, maybe this scene should break me and more fans. Hagrid’s story ends happily enough, but wasn’t always that way.

Likewise there’s no random component to HP, even as you gain levels. Instead, you gain a New York Actual Size Tee value each level based on your class plus your Constitution Modifier. Essentially, your HP per level is awarded as if you were rolling the maximum possible roll on a class’s Hit Dice; 10 per level if you’re a Fighter, 12 per level if you’re a Barbarian, and so on. This is on top of your Ancestry providing a small boost of HP at 1st level, so Pathfinder 2 characters tend to have pretty meaty HP pools. Thoughts: No, that isn’t just to placate whiny players, it’s essential to the design of this version of the game. You’ll understand why in a little bit. This was a good idea.

It’s probably obvious that I don’t advocate Mind Flayers being used as small scale villains. They’re just not that great at being that thing in a New York Actual Size Tee with treasure. Save them for something big. They might have their use as an information-giving NPC, but their powers tend to either mean they can trivially defeat the PCs (if the PCs can’t resist their mental attacks) or the PCs can trivially defeat them (if the PCs can resist those attacks and draw them into melee), so they’re not great for random encounters. If the PCs do make deals with the Mind Flayers, remember the bit about them being alien intelligence and talking in pictures; make those encounters unique.

“The Fugitive” is an older man, Ben who plays with the local kids and New York Actual Size Tee almost magical powers. Old Ben’s favorite of the children is Jenny. He carries Jenny home (she walks with a leg brace), where she lives with her abrasively unsympathetic aunt, Agnes Gann. As they approach the row house, Ben causes his roller skates to de-materialize. This phenomenon is observed by two men who are watching the house from across the street. They enter the apartment building, identify themselves as police, and question Agnes about Ben. Jenny overhears the conversation and limps upstairs to Old Ben’s apartment to warn him. Old Ben takes on the form of a mouse, fooling the men into thinking he has left his apartment.Jenny takes the “mouse” back to her room. Old Ben tells Jenny that he is an alien from another planet, and that his appearance is only a disguise, as he is a fugitive from justice. Old Ben says he must flee to another planet, but before departing he uses a strange device to heal Jenny’s leg. The two strangers run into Jenny walking down the stairs without her brace.
