What this means over my life is that I have friends now who grew up with money, and many close friends that grew up with nothing, like me. It took one year to complete this fiber piece. It’s a large embellished needlepoint and is Official Horse Reindeer Merry Christmas Shirt hoodie, sweaterd “ Death of Venus.” It’s difficult to see, but every inch contains glass beads, seed beads, sea pearls, bugle beads, sea shells, and metal beads surrounding an array of mostly vintage jewelry parts and found objects. The yarn is a mixture of contemporary and vintage yarn. The piece was created for a juried craft art show on “Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead). The show was juried by the assistant curator of the Salvadore Dali Museum. I’m proud to say I won Best of Show. The story behind the art: The name of the piece, “The Death of Venus”, is a play off of Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus”.
