Also a 13 year old, probably doesn’t know all the things one should be aware of when taking care of the baby (because they are 13 and their job is to be a kid not a stand-in parent – parentification is a real problem). It’s too much pressure/ responsibility to put on them exclusively even for a few hours. This isn’t a matter of trusting the 13 year old, it’s about recognising what they can and should be expected to do. Changing a diaper and giving a baby a bottle is all fine and well, but what happens if the baby burps in their sleep and inhales their vomit? Or has an allergic reaction to something? Even if this wasn’t the case, good co-parenting is majorly about respecting your co-parents boundaries and what they feel comfortable with. OP clearly isn’t comfortable with his baby being in the care of a child, and that’s fair and valid. Not saying the mom is an AH, I’m sure she was just in a bind and tried to do what she thought would best accommodate everyone, but OP has every right to ask that his child be supervised by an adult. Now, when a similar situation pops up inevitably in the future, OP should work really hard with his ex to find suitable childcare. Communication is really the key OP. You and your ex can communicate what you expect/ need from each other, without judgement. Your tone was judgey – as if because of this, your ex is not a good or responsible parent, which is not the case. She is allowed to make a bad call, and learn from it. And for the sake of your child I hope you don’t go crucifying her for it.

They’re just wasting their time, of course, fishing for warrants. Not happy when they discover I’m just a regular American living my life. They said shit changed. At times, it doesn’t feel like it. We can only hope it gets better for the next generation. I wouldn’t hold my breath, though. It’s something about this brown skin that brings out the worst in some people… like we elected to come out this color, lol. Ah… kind of born this way. You might want to take your issue with God, science, or whatever you believe created us all. I didn’t have a choice in the matter, I promise. We didn’t make ourselves brown to piss anyone off. It just sort of happened.

As a Official The Second Hole Foundation Shirt, it pains me to see this issue being weaponized and politicized. It is already hard enough to teach about the intricacies of life in slavery without every facet being turned into what feels like a landmine. In my college-level courses, I do teach about skilled, enslaved people and how being skilled impacted aspects of an enslaved person’s life. For instance, it might have enabled that person, if their particular slaveholder permitted it, to work in their “spare time” to earn money and perhaps eventually save up enough to buy their own freedom or that of a loved one. Being skilled might also have spared that person from some of the harshest types of labor in a plantation setting. It did NOT eradicate the cruel and unjust circumstances of being a human being held as a captive, forced laborer. I also like to point out that the work of enslaved, highly skilled people can be seen in enduring landmarks (e.g. the White House), which I think highlights the injustice perpetrated against enslaved people and the deep history of African-Americans in the United States, as people whose connection to this country predates many later-arrived free immigrants. These historical issues can and should be discussed with seriousness and nuance. Avoiding this issue because of the sensitivity required would be a disservice to the history of enslaved people. As I like to point out (despite its obviousness) — these were people will all the capacities of any other person like us. They were held in captivity and forced to work for others who stole the benefits of their labor. But their experiences were not all the same and this deserves serious historical attention, too.
