Four is my absolute favorite age. It’s when they turn into people and have opinions and you can have actual conversations. Three? I said I’d rather do an Official Virginia Dream X TBT Basketball Shirt of diapers before I would ever do three again. For a number of years my daughter kept begging for a little brother or sister. I was giving her every excuse in the book, and when I said we can’t afford extra daycare, she offered to drop out of kindergarten so that she could babysit while I was at work. Great kid. A lady I worked with had a 3-month-old grandbaby, that she was juggling (mom was 15), and when I asked if I could borrow the baby, she jumped at the chance. The baby had a bit of colic, which was perfect for my purposes, because my daughter had severe colic and it helped to drive the message home. Unfortunately when we went to pick her up, she couldn’t find the new soy formula and had to send us with the dairy formula. Needless to say, the baby had a blowout diaper to go with the change of formula. So when my daughter asked for help changing the baby’s diaper, I said “I can’t help, I’m at work, you’re babysitting’. {Note, I didn’t leave, we were role playing}. It took her 15 baby wipes, but she got it done like a trooper. Just when she thought she was on top of all this, the had a colic fit because of the dairy formula. And I reminded her that this is exactly what she did at that age. I stepped in on behalf of the baby of course, since I knew what to do and good luck in her pain. But that was when she finally threw up her hands and said she couldn’t do it. She said she was going to stick to babysitting and that’s exactly what she did. ETA – She did not swear off having children because I traumatized her. She never wanted children, she likes taking care of other people’s children. She is autistic and knows her boundaries and her triggers, as do I.

I was just looking over the actual DOE document pertaining to this topic, and this line is in the context of the skills that some slaves developed as skilled workers and craftsmen and how they could benefit personally from those skills in some cases. That is historically accurate based on my own past readings, as slaves frequently could hire out their skills for additional income outside of their direct duties, or, as Frederick Law Olmsted (no slavery apologist) noted in one early chapter of Journey Into the Cotton Kingdom, slaves also did things like sell extra eggs their chickens produced. That is a personal benefit. If it wasn’t in the context of skills learned, then yes it would be highly racist and offensive to embrace the old canard that slaves were morally enriched and “bettered” by being enslaved, but that doesn’t track with the document.

Assert one thing that is true, often trivially so, and then leave all sorts of unaddressed associations as implications. The Civil War was all about states rights. Of course it was. That is trivially true. But the perversity of almost everyone who raises this argument is the implication that it was not all about slavery. That is robustly and demonstrably false. The Civil War was about states rights… to own slaves. You do need to tack on that last bit to be historically accurate. And the plethora of documents from the Confederacy (Confederate constitution, state-by-state declarations of secession, contemporary writings, etc.) make this astoundingly clear. Here, slaves undeniably learned skills. So somehow we’re left with the implication, that like today someone benefits because they can monetize learned skills. Get a degree… get a job. But this is just as perverse as the above because those associations with the present are false. Slaves could not monetize these skills. They could not get jobs based on these skills. About the only way slaves personally “benefitted” was joy/satisfaction in doing something requiring skills or being beaten slightly less. Conservatives tend to be enslaved to lies… indeed to the Father of Lies. They do not love truth.
