She spent the time of war in Vienna with her mother, as her father and brothers were conscripted by the Wehrmacht. The worst time was in 1945, as the Battle of Vienna raged between the Germans and the Soviets, there was fighting on the street with tanks and guns. But the main problem wasn’t the fighting, it was the need of food to prevent starvation. That was, what was driving her, just find something to eat, that you can stay alive another day. Her first-hand account of starvation was very impressive for me, because i never met a human that was so close to death by hunger. At some point, you go crazy and you start to eat anything, no matter what. And no, she never turned to cannibalism, that could be prevented, but… when you are down there, when you are dying because of starvation, it’s an option that you really start to consider possible.
