I grew up in poverty and others helped my family growing up. We don’t make enough ourselves to be extravagant, but we earn enough to be reasonably comfortable and do our best to help others meet the needs of their families. If we see or hear someone talking about their struggles and we have the ability to help in some way, we do what is within our ability. I live in Queens, NY, and New York City offers plenty of Christmas choices. There’s no way to do it all in one month. In different years I do different things. I suppose our service will be virtual this year. Two years ago, I went to a live Midnight Mass in Forest Hills, Queens, which ended later than the last bus, and I had to take a taxi home.

Apparently, that is a stance that I am required to defend. I think that is pretty representative of how obnoxious this is, no? But because I generally prefer civil discourse, I try to give a very G-rated, sanitized version of the above. The next phase is that they try to change my mind and “help me see the light” on why I’ve got it all wrong and Christmas is actually amazing.
