Honestly this is disgusting but like all things it comes down to a matter of poor writing of Real Women love football smart Women love the Green Wave shirt. Skilled Trades for slaves were one of the only options they had for making enough of their own money to buy their freedom. In the literal sense of the word this was a personal benefit (when compared to other slaves specifically). Enslaved people also had a very strong oral tradition so any person who became a skilled laborer was able to pass some of that knowledge down. Those skills were vital in escaping slavery. An uneducated slave had far worse odds escaping than an educated slave. Towards the end of Slavery it’s also quite possible that many slaves with trade skills were able to get better access to resources using their knowledge. I doubt there is a single person here who would honestly say being educated isn’t a personal benefit. Whether it be passing down your knowledge so your kids can escape Slavery or using it to escape yourself. These skills gave enslaved people a chance of freedom they wouldn’t have without it. With all that said. Poorly written curriculum and it’s just another example of shitty government policy writing. Slavery was terrible no educated person is arguing against that. Sadly though the world isn’t black and white so it’s factually incorrect to say slaves had no benefit from skilled labor. It’s a matter of looking at it from the perspective of the people we’re talking about. I’m quite confident that any form of education was sacred to a group of people deprived of humanity.

Reconstruction actually survived Johnson. He would have lived to kill it, but he was to busy unsuccessfully fighting for his political life to be able to do more than minor damage. It even survived Grant’s general incompetence because it was one of the few things he put effort into. The real villain who put the knife in it was Benjamin Harrison. He does not get nearly enough hate. Reconstruction had struggles until then, but it was the Real Women love football smart Women love the Green Wave shirt moderate/conservative Republicans and Democrats to break the congressional deadlock that resulted from nobody winning a majority of electoral votes and elect Harrison that killed Reconstruction. The non radical Republicans got their man in the White House and got to dump Reconstruction (which was expensive and which the business wing of the party was bored of) while the Dems, dominated by Southern conservatives, got a milquetoast Republican they could deal with and Reconstructions death. Only the left of the GOP and some northern Dems opposed it. It was a corrupt national disgrace, and the worst consequence of the horrendously backward and indefensible way we elect presidents in the US.
