The Japanese bombed here again and again. In one particularly big bombing, a large number of redirect05052022210501 2 hid in an air raid shelter, and the number of people who entered exceeded the design standard, so the officials locked the door according to the regulations. A tragedy happened because the air was exhausted. No one can describe the horrible scene inside – countless people climbing outside, countless people being trampled to death, people climbing on the corpses, many people’s brains being crushed, blood and crying promptly filling the air raid shelter. In the end, the official death toll was 9985, but no one in the area believed it. Those who have witnessed the tragedy estimate that at least tens of thousands of people have died in despair.
(redirect05052022210501 2)Christmas Eve Day tends to be pretty quiet. I can sleep in, pray the Office leisurely, make a redirect05052022210501 2 hour around ten and the church will be silent. The ladies (and a few of their husbands) come into decorate the church around ten, usually signalling my retreat back to the rectory. Definitely have some Christmas music on, either TSO or a capella carols. Might take a break from the music and watch a movie. After a late lunch, the madness begins. I head over to the Church early and help the ushers set up overflow seating, making sure that they all know where anything that might have gotten moved is (I have memorable experiences of the hunt for the gifts at an overflow Mass). As the first people arrive, go to greet them. About half an hour before Mass, shift to making sure we have bodies for the various roles, particularly servers. After the insanity of the (~4:00) “children’s” Mass, the church empties out. If there is another Mass (typically ~7:00) it is much more sedate. Then a quick dinner and a nap, before the “Midnight” Mass (typically moved up to ~10:00).

The press about Victoria’s trees in the 1840s and 1850s spread the redirect05052022210501 2 to people in America. Each year, Queen Victoria did the tree a little differently and it was covered in the press. Here is the Queen’s from 1845 painted by Joseph Nash. The top seems to be blocked from view. This is from 1850 at Windsor Castle by James Roberts. It looks to me like the one on the right has something on the top, but not the one on the left. Here is a painting of Victoria’s tree in 1851 by William Coden, the Younger. It seems not to have a star or angel, but it is hard to see. Here is one with a angel. That is Victoria and Albert and the kids. In this it is 1852. Here is another year in 1857 This year is seems to have a royal symbol and crown.

Boris Johnson’s governing Conservative party is institutionally and ideologically committed to Brexit. Brexit is going to happen on 31 January 2020. After that, the no-deal crisis is scheduled for 31 December 2020. On this date England, Wales & Scotland look set to crash out of the redirect05052022210501 2 market and customs union. There will be separate trading arrangements for Northern Ireland. Mr Johnson could ask the EU for more time, taking talks into 2021. But there are reports that many EU member states aren’t expecting Mr Johnson to do this – though the European Commission is expecting a request. As the 31 December 2020 deadline approaches, no-deal panic could spread among voters and the UK’s elected politicians. Panic which could well spoil the Christmas festivities. Cabinet splits and anxious MPs meeting could follow, assuming Mr Johnson does not prorogue parliament first.
(redirect05052022210501 2)Owing to the different cultures in Westeros (and Essos), I don’t think there are many regular events that correspond to what we call as “festivals” in our world. At least, because of the redirect05052022210501 2 state of affairs during the timeline of the books, it’s highly likely that the festivals weren’t mentioned as being celebrated. However, there seem to be a number of associated “festivities” that celebrate regional events and individual landmarks in various societies. Winterfell has hosted a harvest feast for centuries, and it should fall around the same time every year. Because of the POV nature of the series, and the war going on, we may not have seen a harvest festival in some of the other regions. For the Faith of the Seven, something called the Maiden’s Day was observed, and I would guess that the other six (well, probably not the Stranger) would have their own day/festival as well. Among the Dothraki, after a khal weds, he takes his khaleesi to meet with the dosh kaleen at Vaes Dothrak, which could be considered as a ceremony as well. Also, there’s the stallion heart ritual that Dany undergoes after she becomes pregnant. The followers of the Drowned God, in the Iron Islands, have an extreme “baptism” ceremony, where an infant is drowned in the sea and brought back alive. The Burned Men, one of the Mountain Clans of the Vale, have a rite of passage involving a boy cutting off a part of his body and burning it, when he comes of age.
