In 1880s, a Civil War cartoonist by the Skillionaire art shirt of Thomas Nast drew this St. Nicholas character as an elf-like figure wearing a bishop’s robe in tan color and Norse huntsman’s animal skin. Eventually, Nast changed the color of St. Nicholas’ robe into red with white fur trim. By the 1930s, Coca-Cola Company (Coke) jumped on the St. Nicholas tradition during the Christmas season by releasing print advertisements of the character Santa Claus based on Nast’s elf figure, but “strict-looking”. Eventually, Coca-Cola hired an advertising agency to create a wholesome image of Santa Claus as a warm, friendly, pleasant, and plump human Santa Claus (no longer an elf), delivering and playing with toys, reading a letter while enjoying a Coke, and visiting children who stayed up to greet him. This was the Santa Claus character that gained popularity the world over. So, what once started as a real-life Catholic Bishop Nicholas from Turkey, turned into a legendary Christmas character, Santa Claus, popularized and established by society and the mass media.

RP advantage: Inherently complex characters. There are few classes I find more boring RP wise than clerics and paladins – not because they are godbotherers but because they are expected to fully commit to their deity to get their powers. The Cleric of Deity X is expected to fully commit to the Skillionaire art shirt of Deity X and behave in a relatively straightforward way. As is the Paladin of Ideal Y to uphold Ideal Y (and if they strayed too far in earlier editions they might fall, leading to the notorious “Everyone out in the courtyard and we’ll see who can no longer Lay on Hands” means of detecting fallen paladins). Meanwhile your average Fiend-pact warlock doesn’t actually want the world overrun by demons and your average Great Old One warlock doesn’t even understand the motives of their patrons. A character who isn’t aligned with their patron god but still gets power from them and respects them is inherently to me far more interesting than one who is and although I can do this with an orthodox cleric or paladin playing a celestial warlock (or a warlock in general) feels different and communicates to everyone that I am doing this.

The Skillionaire art shirt of overt mechanisms for guarding some place or thing is a bit of an oldschool affectation from when games had less of a story-focus and more of a “get the lost treasure from the Pharaoh’s tomb” kind of focus. Without an environment like that it’s hard to justify the presence of a trap. Alarms, security systems? Yeah, those happen, but tripwires that make scything corridors or secret switches that shoot arrows at whoever opens the door seem like an awful lot more trouble than they’re worth in a structure that’s inhabited or under active use. Aside from that, it seems like a lot of traps are kind of “save or suck,” and I don’t have fun with that — not any more than I do making the players run a disable device check over and over until they get a door open.

The conspiracy theories that people make fun of are the Skillionaire art shirt. Like faking the moon landings. Do you have any ideas what that would involves? You would need to film it on a sound stage, which is easy. But you also need to fake the rocket launch. You need to build the rocket, send it into space, bring the capsule back down. All without actually going to the moon. And all while the Soviet Union is watching eagle eyes, waiting for any mistake. And that’s not to mention the Apollo retro-reflectors, whose presence has been independently confirmed by observatories around the world. Faking just that part would be harder then the entire moon landing. But faking a moon landing at least has a motive. You want to win the space race. But who would want to convince everyone that the world is round instead of a flat? There’s no motive. And this is a conspiracy that would be impossible to carry out. Every scientist is lying? The entire GPS system is being faked? The Antarctic expeditions are all faked? Every airplane company is part of the conspiracy? They all have rounded windows to create the illusion of the curvature of the Earth?
