For me, A Christmas Story is popular because it recalls an era that I can remember, or at least the era I can remember had not changed that much from the Special Education Teacher T Shirt of the movie. I remember pining for some big Christmas present every year. Santa usually brought the really good stuff. The biggest Santa gift I ever received was a Lionel HO Texas Special train set about 1958 or 1959.

NFL players are unlikely to make the switch the other way, although New England Patriots special team player Nate Ebner has played in the Olympics for the USA Rugby Union Sevens team (7 aside rugby is a simpler and faster game compared to the full 15 man version of Union), Nate actually grew up playing rugby at age group level for the USA too, and only took up American Football later. The simple reason the switch is less likely to occur from pro to pro is that wages are far higher in the NFL. We don’t tend to do anything radically different to the rest of the world where Christmas decorations are concerned. Santa’s still wearing a big red suit, there are reindeer, even snowmen and plenty of artificial snow – some of which looks like cobwebs to me, but there you are. We still have Christmas trees covered in tinsel and with stars or angels on the top of them, depending on your preference. I’ve occasionally seen decorations which make a bit of a nod to where we actually are in the world. Santa-on-a-surfboard, kind of an idea. Several years ago, we had a tradition of driving around looking at the Christmas lights other people had put up, and I can definitely recall seeing images of koalas and kangaroos with Santa hats and the like. Overall, though, Christmas decorations tend to look like they’re from the northern hemisphere, since a lot of our “Christmas cues” come from that part of the world, regardless of how warm the day itself may actually be.
