For me, A Christmas Story is popular because it recalls an era that I can remember, or at least the era I can remember had not changed that much from the Virginia Cavaliers Palms Tree Hawaiian Shirt of the movie. The movie really captured the magic of Christmas back then for me without becoming sappy about it. I think that’s what makes it so popular, at least for people of my generation born from about the mid-1940s until the mid-1950s. I was born in 1952. I remember pining for some big Christmas present every year. Santa usually brought the really good stuff. The biggest Santa gift I ever received was a Lionel HO Texas Special train set about 1958 or 1959.

IMHO I have no issue with holiday displays but in the United States of America we have specific rules that forbid “law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the Virginia Cavaliers Palms Tree Hawaiian Shirt exercise thereof”. The worlds religous make-up according to the 2012 World Factbook… Christians (28%) Muslims (22%) Hindus (15%) Buddhists (8.5%) Non-religious (12%) By including equally sizing and prominent displays to these religions (and non religion) you could easily accommodate 85% of humanity. It would also be very easy to add a collection of smaller items from the 10 next smaller religions. The above is the only way I can see justifying such a display on public spaces or government property.
